Projects, Mail Art, and List It Tuesday

I have a couple of projects that I am supposed to be working on, but I've been procrastinating on them for about a week now. I did, however, start getting supplies together. One of the projects I am involved in is a post card exchange using hand made stamps. I cut enough watercolor paper to size yesterday and then started thinking about mail art. This led to the carving of a few new stamps that may or may not be used in this exchange.

I have questions about mail art that I am hoping to get answers to. When you exchange art post cards, do you put them in an envelope to send them or do you send them with the addy on the art itself? Do you make art on both sides and just have a small part of the back where you put your info and exchange name? If you only art up one side, how do you keep the other side pristine? I always seem to get paint on the edges of the back of my art work! Am I a slob? Does this happen to you? I am hoping you can help me out here.

In other matters, I have a value study in greys that I am supposed to be working on using a Van Gogh flowers sketch provided by the lovely Maer. I really must get started on this sometime today so that I don't end up rushing it.

It is List It Tuesday again today and the lovely Aimee at Artsyville has suggested a list of things I am a Sucker For, so here goes:

Today I am a volunteer at the Book Cellar at the downtown branch of the Jackson District Library and then I will come home for a bit before heading for the daughter's to spend the night. She rented "It's Complicated" last week and it was a hoot. I think she is renting "Leap Year". She is a dear to bother to entertain me on Tuesday evenings. Now if I can only figure out a way to actually get a good night's sleep there. She has to be to work at 6 am, so I will get the girls up at 7 and get them ready and onto the bus.

What about you? What are you up to today? Does it include cooking? sewing? drawing? painting? Do share...

xoxo

  2. I've never tried mail art but hand-making your own ink stamps is a wonderful idea. Love the one-of-a-kind arty look of them.

I'm hoping to have a creative afternoon, maybe some papercrafting and some blogging. I hope your volunteering day goes well, sounds like it could be fun.

  3. With all these awesome lists rolling in, I'm making a master grand list of everyone's jottings in my head and there's so much that I missed -- like soup! fresh fruit! crossword puzzles! I did get coffee and dark chocolate though :)

  4. I love your stamps. They are charming. Never tried mail art, although I used to decorate envelopes in the TBE (time before email).

  5. I put the address on the back of the card and consider the paint splashes part of the charm. :) But I've also received postcards in an envelope. I think it's totally your discretion!!

Sister get-togethers. Yes, those are fabulous!!

  7. Wonderful carving Vicki, imagine the savings not having to buy stamps. I got together with a group of like minded souls not so long ago and we made stamps it was such fun and we are now swapping ATCs made from our stamps. Thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog. Clare

  8. Excellent carving ~ Busy lady as usual ~ thanks for coming by ~ (A Creative Harbor)

ps ~ Historically when I did post card swaps I used cardstock and used one side and sent it through the mail ~ I would check with the group you are swapping with for the more current trend ^_^

  9. You can do whatever you want with mail art, and people do all kinds of things. Some things I mail as postcards, and some I put into envelopes. There's definitely no rule about one side being pristine!

Mail art is really wide open to interpretation and anything goes.

  13. I love your stamps! What material are they made from? Also, yes, the backs of everything look a mess with me. Not sure why, but paint gets back there.

I wish I were a sucker for exercise classes! Dang! Large bodies of water ...love. Crosswords, yes! And art supplies and classes: yes, yes, yes!

    1. Hi Em,

I've made stamps from erasers from the dollar store and school supply shops, but these are made from a material I like much better to carve. They are Nasco Safety Kut material that I ordered in a classroom set. I think I got 36 2 x 3 pieces for just under $25, really inexpensive compared to much of what I've seen available.
