Girl Tribe and My Troubled Watercolor

I think I've finished my watercolor, but I think it is ruined by the pigment spots in the water. Is there any way to rescue it? I may have to start over and not use the offending Ultramarine or figure out how to use it without it settling like that. I was planning to use this for the exhibit I have a spot in for the month of November. Does anyone have an idea if this is salvageable? At any rate, for what it is worth, here is the finished product:

Here is some art by my Miss K who spent Saturday evening and overnight until Sunday late morning with her sister, Miss Z at our house.

In my Artful Journal class,  the next assignment is to do some Word Art. I used to do quite a bit of word art using Photoshop. As a matter of fact I sold a few pieces and I have the originals to show you. What do you think of this kind of art?

I think the assignment for the class was to make a journal cover and to do it by hand using watercolors, so I have to do some thinking and decide what I will do. When I have it decided and put it together, I will share it with you.

I am driving up to my Mom's tomorrow and staying until early Saturday morning. I am sure to have a great time and hope the weather cooperates and that I get lots of pix of gorgeous Fall color. I will be taking my computer and hope to have things to share with you while I am gone. I will be taking my journal and some watercolor supplies so will have no excuses for not being creative.

For now, I will leave you with a lovely smile from Miss Z:

Reminder:  I will be drawing for the My Memories Suite 2 digital scrapbooking software around midnight tonight. Get your name in here if you want a chance to win.

xoxo

  1. Vicki, I LOVE your word art. It looks like a lot of fun trying to twist and turn the letters in Photoshop, and then adding the embellishments. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I'd offer advice on the watercolor except I know very little about watercolor. Word art I do know and yours is FUN! Love the feeling of movement in the horse.

  3. I wish I could offer you advice but I'm just learning watercolors myself. If anyone does know the solution... I would be interested in hearing it too!

  4. What a shame that this should happen to a lovely picture. Are you sure that it isn't your paper? Some papers seem to 'rub' and it makes the paint appear blotchy. I think the thing with watercolours is waiting till the back wash is completely dry (like overnight). If you dont then the paper gets too wet and marks appear. I'm not sure about how to get rid of them but I'd be tempted to either intensify the colour of the sea to make them less noticible or maybe even spatter paint over the top to make it look as if it was intentional and this will more textured. Your little girl is beautiful by the way!

  5. Love the word art! Could you very carefully, and with a much dryer brush than you have been using, turn the spots into little fishing boats or a sailing regatta? If you have one in the foreground, the rest do not have to be much more than boat shaped blobs. Just a thought.

  6. Wonderful, clever word art! Maybe you could design yours digitally, then tackle it freehand? Would that be cheating?

  7. Such a beautiful smile Miss Z has ^^ Not sure how to rescue watercolor drawing from pigment spots, I'd probably slab more color onto it without water. Nice words designs!

  8. Vicki--

I had to look hard to see the spots and even then they didn't jump out at me. I love the calmness and peace of your scene, and hate that you might have to do it over. Perhaps what you could do is mix a slightly darker wash of the sea color and do a glaze over it. That might cover the spots a bit. Ultramarine is somewhat sedimentary, so the only thing I can think of is that after you'd made your mix, you might have let it sit for a while and not stirred it before putting it on the paper. Love the painting, though. Looking forward to Toledo in Nov!
