Home Again with Miss Z

Miss Z came over last evening to spend the night with us and she is right here in her high chair keeping me company while I write this. Actually she began to fuss and she only fusses when it is time to eat. So I gave her a bottle and put her down for a nap.

Before she arrived yesterday, I made some Chorizo Soup which turned out really well and we had some for dinner. I made a double batch so I sent some home with Miss Z's Mom.

It is a really easy recipe and only takes about an hour from start to finish. Here is the recipe:

I gessoed over the water on the old watercolor that I was working on and then watercolored over it, but was still very disappointed, so when I arrived home yesterday I started a couple more. I have two of them and like one of them quite a bit more than the other. Of course, the hubster likes the one I don't like, so I'd like to ask you this:  Should I use one of these as my entry in the non-juried exhibition? If I should use one of these, which one? Should I trash these and begin again?

My daughter just called. She is sick (possibly strep; she is seeing the doctor at 1 pm) and wants me to pick up Miss M after school this afternoon and take her to ballet practice. That should be fun and I will take my camera and see if I can get some decent pix.

The hubster is having surgery on his Achilles tendon first thing in the morning so I will be spending most of the day at the hospital. I should have plenty of opportunity to do some sketching. I'll check in sometime tomorrow after we get home.

I'd really appreciate some feedback on the two watercolors above.

  1. The bean soup looks yummy! Sorry about your daughter being sick. Sounds like you are doing a lot of caregiving for family right now. Sketching will help things go smoother. :) I like the top watercolor sketch with the trees reflecting in the water the best. The hazy purple trees in the background are great - not overworked, diffused but still defined - nicely muted. The water has a nice rippled look. What kind of watercolor paper do you use?

  2. Thanks for the input, Fay. This time I used 140# Arches paper.

  3. I like the trees too. Lovely reflection in the water. Maybe that's what's missing in the second one?

  4. I like the first watercolor - the colors are nice and clear, not muddy. I think this one has definite potential!

  5. I also really like the first one, the reflections really help it! And the bean soup sounds very tasty!

  7. Thanks for the reminder about the chorizo soup. I tried it last year and it was delicious and, since they're saying the weather should be cooling off in the next few days, I'll look forward to revisiting the recipe! Good luck to your husband tomorrow and I hope he has a speedy recovery. As for the watercolors, I always love trees in a landscape so that's my favorite!

  9. Thanks for the recipe. I always enjoy visiting your blog. I'm off to the Netherlands for 2 weeks very soon. Perhaps we'll catch up when I return.

  10. These are both very good. I agree that the first one with the trees is better. The reflections are done really well. My only complaint about the second one is that you have a very slight arc in the brushstrokes for the water. It is very slight, but a little distracting. It may be possible to fix it though. And maybe that one could use some reflections in the water too?

  11. My oh my... looking at your post during lunch time when I've not eaten is dangerous ^^
Love the watercolors, I think you've pulled them off really well and the colors are cool and calm, nicely executed Vicki!
