Fun Friday and a Blind Contour

I really have to thank Peggy Stermer-Cox for reminding me about blind contours. They are so much fun and I think they are good practice. She has a new site appropriately named "Blind Contour Friday" where you can link your post on your blog for others to see what you've done. I never considered myself a "joiner" but I am gung-ho about this idea.

Last night just before going to bed, I decided to do my Friday assignment (she actually doesn't expect you to do it on Friday, you can add your link on her site any day). I just happened to have a foot at the end of my leg just waiting to be drawn. Of course I took off my slipper first. Here is what I ended up with:

Looks like I am playing Beast to Little Miss 3's Belle :-)

I was so surprised by how short and wide I'd made it, I decided to try drawing it looking back and forth from the foot to my paper and here is what I have:

Looks like I may have overcompensated for the width of the blind contour.

I think this one is a bit narrower than my actual foot, but it isn't too bad. I still am not used to drawing with pen. It looks a bit messy to me.

I finally made room for my watercolors and decided to do a really loose painting yesterday. I really enjoyed playing, but wasn't very happy with the result. I reminded myself that sometimes it isn't the destination, but the journey that is important.

I decided it was too unformed, so added the ink lines. I may have made it worse.

I had a wonderful surprise this morning when I opened my email. The same artist who purchased the "I Dare You" journal has also purchased "Under Mad Anthony's Banner". I feel good knowing it is going to a good home.

I think I told you I am taking a drawing class with Monica Zuniga. I need to download more videos, but can't do it from home. I think I may visit my daughter today and download them at her house. Other than that, I am free to do as I please today. I may try to make a small 2-needle coptic.

For now, I need another mug of coffee and then I'd better call the daughter to see if my plan works for her.

Thank you for visiting and Happy Holidays to all!

xoxo

  1. I want to try blind contour drawing now.... I want to learn to draw better. Maybe I will step into that in 2011.

    Thank you for the inspiration.

  2. I can only see the photo of your foot, the first drawing. The other little boxes show as text only, like they're captions for the photos. Dang!
I wanted to see the watercolor.

  3. I don't know, I like the watercolour the way it is, I didn't think anything about the lines until you mentioned them, and I still like it.

  5. Hi Vicki, Thank you thank you for the mention! I was happy to see your link at that you were able to post. Wonderful blind contour drawing! I think your feet look great! Isn't it funny how you think you've nailed the contour and then you look at the drawing and...well...hmmm! It's the process! And you're doing it right! How did it feel to do the next foot right away? I'm with B @ Sweet Limes; I think your watercolor is fine the way it is. It's poetic!

  7. Oh, be still inner critic. The watercolor painting is cheerful and I like the colored pens that you used for accent. It's a quick piece, not meant to hang is a museum. Enjoy.

  8. I don't think you made anything worse. I love the way the color spread, and how unique it looks.

  9. With the link to your blog on EDM I can see the watercolor...and agree with the others, I like it just the way it is. Put a mat on it, put in a frame and pat yourself on the back...and don't forget to sign and date it. You're creating an art history of Vicki...years down the road you'll be amazed at how far you've come.

  10. Wow, seems great fun, I need to try blind contouring too. And your watercolor work is very delicate, I think lines are beautiful.

  11. I usually exaggerate one direction when I do blind contours. Sometimes I've moved too fast on the vertical, and sometimes on the horizontal. Resulting in something that looks 'almost' like it but not quite as it is too wide or too long! So, yes, this looks very familiar to me! :D I think you've done a great job on them!

I think the watercolor looks just fine, especially with the lines.

  12. Great sketches. The contours are really great exercises. And yes, it is the journey, not the destination that matters. Sometimes we just need to play. Something I need to remind myself of because I tend to forget. Playing with are tools is very important. Everything doesn't have to be a finished or marketable product to be good and make us happy.
