Polish Woman Sketch and Miss M's Art

I've attempted a sketch of the Polish woman that Nina Camic so graciously gave me permission to use and overall I am pleased with it. I think there is that "magic" something missing that would bring her to life, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. Can you help? You can see the original photo here.

Miss M at first thought the woman in the photo was a little angry, but then when I told her that this woman was beautiful and was smiling in greeting, she agreed that she was beautiful. She then said, "Her hair is beautiful, Nana. It's gray, but beautiful!" I had to agree with her. This is a face full of character and a certain charm. I'm not sure I captured that, but if you go to the original photo using the link above, I think you will be charmed as well.

Meanwhile, Miss M sat next to my computer sketching in her journal and made a self portrait while I was working. Here she is at work:

And here is her self portrait. Notice the ponytail off to the side. That is how I did her hair that morning.

Well, I am expecting Miss M again this morning. In fact, she will be here some time in the next half hour. I'm on my first mug of coffee and she and I will undoubtedly do some art, work some puzzles, and maybe snuggle together and watch a movie. I will take her to school around noon.

I hope to get a bit of time to do some art today and am hoping the same for you.

xoxo

  1. I love feedback too, but am not always comfortable giving it because - what do I know! I might suggest to lighten her iris a little and add in some shading to show those beautiful apple cheeks in the photo. I enjoy looking at all your great work, keep it coming.

  2. I think you did a great job on the picture of the Polish woman. I looked at that site yesterday and immediately recognized the subject. Miss M's self portrait is very nice too!

  3. This is one of your best sketches. I would just add some shading to the neck and ear area. Keep improving Jan

  4. Both the Polish woman and Miss M are very charming. I think a little more shading to round the cheeks and put some shadows into the neck are just what's needed. I love the bright eyes.

  5. I really think you have captured the essence of this lady. I am no expert, but maybe a splash of colour might just be the magic you are looking for...when I say splash, that could something very subtle :)

  6. You did a wonderful job with this, and all your drawing has certainly paid off. You just keep getting better and better! Little Miss M is clearly pleased with what she is doing, and her self-portrait is very well done and sweet! hugs, nancy

  7. This is a great sketch. When I look at it, I see a lot of character in her face. I think I would like to see more detail and shading in the face (especially the forehead)...like deepening those hard-earned wrinkles. I think that would really bring out her character. Keep at it!
